Art Manifesto

A synopsis of recent art manifestos

Anti-anti-art
The Spirit of what needs to be done

1. The Stuckists are anti-anti-art.
2. Conceptual art (and its parochial manifestation as Brit Art) is based on and justified by the art of Marcel Duchamp.
3. The art of Marcel Duchamp is not art. It is anti-art by intent and effect.
4.To justify anti-art there must be the existence of art.
5. Duchamp's work was a protest against the stale, unthinking artistic establishment of his day.
6. Today's art is anti-art.
7. Today's art is not art. Its working methodology is to think of something which is not art and to call it art. This is exactly Duchamp's ideology.
8. (Conceptualism is so called not because it generates a plethora of concepts, but because it never manages to progress beyond one single concept, namely Duchamp's original thought.)
9. The great (but wholly unintentional) irony of Post Modernism is that it is a direct equivalent of the conformist, unoriginal establishment that Duchamp attacked in the first place.
10. The principle of anti-art is meaningless in the absence of art to be anti.
11. The only viable innovation today is the true Duchampian path of anti-pretentious, self-congratulatory, claustrophobic, talentless artistic conformism, e.g. the Saatchi Gallery.
12. The Stuckists are the true inheritors of the spirit of what needs to be done.
13. Anti-anti-art is for art.

FOUR ways to get attention

1. Sound
Loud sounds can attract people's attention. It's been use for street performances, when people hear sound, they will want to see what's happening.

2.Example
To get others to be active, the performer can choose one or two friends to start an example, and if people are interest, they will start to play theirselves.

3.Question
Start with asking some questions that relate to the topic, and people can answer as group or individual, then just talk into the topic, and introduce more content and details.

4.Be Active
In order to get others to be active, the performer herself/himself needs to be active first, so she/he can attract other people's attention, and then he/she can starts to play with others, so the viewers become performers.

Performances Conclusion

After in the previous project presentation, as precipitator and observer, I have learned many lessons. In the first presentation, which used a beautiful and ugly object, I spend a lot of time to think about the definition of beauty and ugly, how to present their strengths in my presentation; I like the process of observing them and try to define their meaning. As result, I presented my beautiful (a cute pink pen) and ugly object’s (a black face pen) usage effect to express the differences between my beautiful and ugly object. Being a observer, I also learned new lessons from other classmates, each one of them have unique way of defining beauty and ugly; among those presentation, Laiya’s definition, “nothing is actually ugly”, made a deep impression to me, and it reminds me of “nothing is absolute”. Later when I looked at my ugly pen, the longer I looked at it, I started to think its face is kind of cute, in an ugly way.

In the second and third performances, I learned how to work with partners; the purpose was to use multiple objects to do a presentation. In this performance, I learned how to find material and inspiration in my surrounding, and how to use them as tool for the presentation. This project contains large amount of creativity, and I think it’s really important that an artist should always know how to get inspiration, and how to used select objects. Later in the group project, eight people gather together and use multiple objects to present a performance. This project involved group work, and quick ideas.

In those performances, I learn to observed with more details and try to define and understand them; what’s beautiful, what’s ugly, how do I used them for creativity, and how to get inspiration from those items. All of those presentations brought an important lesson for artists, we need to learn how to get inspirited from surrounding, choosing objects, and use them for ideal development. It’s a unique way to learn when I saw other people’s performances, trying to understand their ideas and the messages that they want to deliver.

Documentaries on Duet Performances

Elsa & Laiya

In Laiya and Elsa’s performance, they set up the shooting studio in the dark, with a lamp to light up the background, which fill of posters; as Laiya shooting photo of Elsa, she also tells what posture Elsa should post. The main idea that I get is that the photographer is trying to make model post like the model in the background poster, but the model didn’t do a good job because that’s not who she is, so the photographer is making her to be someone she’s not. This performance also reflects to daily life, when people trying to be something that they are admire or look up to, while they are pretending to be that someone, they have discarded their own personalities, and forget the fact that every person has individual strengths within them.

Jacobo & Zac

For Jacobo and Zac’s performance, a paper notice post on their body says “feel free to write on the sticker the first thing that comes into your mind when you see the performance. How does it make you feel? Now put the sticker on my body”. In result, every class student had written something on the sticker and stick on their body. I think this performance took a lot of courage for people to perform in a public space, when I first saw this performance, I felt shock to see people taking off clothes for their performance, but later when I’m cover from shocking, and people start to write down their feeling and thoughts on the sticker. This performance is actually very interesting to me; it’s shocking, but also simple to records people’s reactions, and fresh to sees something that’s much unexpected, so I think this performance is very unique.

Documentaries on Beautiful & Ugly objects

Smile ;)

In Ali’s presentation, he uses the ugly object, the coffee cup, and turns it into his beautiful object, which is the smile. The idea of turning something wasteful into something is very wonderful; the whole concept is simple and clear. This performance reminds me of everyday life; this isn’t a wonderful world where everything is perfect; we need to deal with difficulties and problems, but with a simple beautiful smile, our situations or decisions can easily change with our emotion.

Transformation~

In this beautiful and ugly performance, Teresa uses tear pages of the gossip magazine, and folds into star and puts them in a clear, beautiful shape milk bottle. Her concept is similar to Ali, which is to turns something awful into something wonderful; The pattern of torn magazine is mess when it’s been torn into piece, but when she fold into star, the pattern becomes very unique. Her narratives stories has remind some common people’s life, with a music background, and one person sitting in the center folding stars, the whole scene gives a lonely atmosphere, like she’s folding star as she’s wishing for something wonderful.

Beautiful & Ugly Objects (definition included)

Beautiful Object (Left)

I choose this pinky, girly pen as my beautiful object because personally I really like this pen. When I put the pen in my pen container, itself can be a useful decoration; when I write with this pen, it gives a nice view of the holder, and the pen can gives a thin-nice flow lines. I like this object not only because it’s beautiful, but also functional as well.

My definition of “beautiful” is an strong positive feeling that objects express, it can be something that last forever, or just a moment; Forever beauty is usually very rare, takes time for people to make it, find it, or create it; Moment beauty is a very common for people, because our interest always change, so something is beautiful now, but maybe not beautiful few days, or few years later, but shorter moment beauty also take people’s time to discover it, so I’m enjoy everything when I look around. Beauty gives strong positive impression, and the beauty itself can last forever or just a shortly moment.

Ugly Object (Right)

I choose this black pen with a mean face on the front as my ugly object. In contract of the beautiful object that I chosen, this object is much uglier than the beautiful one. The whole black and red hue on the pen give a dark and bloody sense, and the scary white fang also in corporate the sense of fear. When I first look at it, the first reaction comes to my mind is ugly, so I just choose it for its appearance.

In contract of beauty, ugly is something that’s totally the opposite. When beauty presents it’s glory, and left positive impression, ugly object can gives a strong negative impression; usually ugly can relates to fear or insecurity. The objects’ appearances, texture, or the context of it’s color left some kind of negative, or unwanted feeling, is considers ugly to me.
